My Case Studies

Case Study:

This is Zak, a 14hh gelding.

As you can see in the photo a molar is growing where an incisor should be, this is very rare. The bottom incisor is in occlusion (in contact) with the molar. To remove this would mean surgery and because of the size of the root it would leave a big hole in the skull. This would take a long time to heal and would be prone to infection. It was decided along with a vet that it would be better to leave it in place as it was causing no distress to the horse. The bottom incisor would need to be rasped to take the tooth out of occlusion, so not to wear the molar. This pony will need to see a dentist every 3 months to do this and to keep a check on the molar.

This is Herbie.

He needed work to remove this large overgrowth on the 108/109 molar area. This was caused by a missing molar on the lower arcade. The 108 had nothing to grind against so erupted into the space. The lower arcade had huge ramps to the 311/411 The incisors had a smile appearance. This is because there was little excursion to evenly wear the incisors. Regular dentistry will help balance this horses mouth and prevent re-occurring problems.

This is a 9 year old Welsh Section A pony.

This pony was referred to me from a local vet. As you can see from the photos he has a large ramp on the lower arcade and a huge step on the upper arcade. Also present on examination I found hooks on the upper pre-molars, spurs and ATRs.

This horse needed a lot of work to correct these problems, including rasping to remove the large step, hooks and ramp. Regular dentistry will help to keep this horse from re-occurring problems.
